Eating Your Way to a Healthier Lifestyle

There are many fad diets out there to choose from, but it’s hard to know which one is best for you. Before you start any diet, you should assess your lifestyle and eating habits. For instance, do you eat because you are bored, sad or unhappy? Do you eat out in restaurants mostly or do you eat meals at home? These behaviors are very hard to change, so you may need to work within your habits and current lifestyle in order to achieve your weight loss goals. If you are an emotional eater, you will want to keep all the unhealthy snacks out of your house. Replace them with fruits and crunchy vegetables with dip, or keep some nuts handy for those times when your emotions are ruling your eating habits.

Sometimes a diet is not what you need at all. Many times we just need to look at what we are eating and try to build meals that are as healthy as possible. Whole vegetables that are eaten in their natural state are the best for you. By pairing them with lean meat will help to keep insulin levels under control and stabilize metabolism. Your plate should be separated into three parts with one third consisting of lean meat and the other two thirds with fresh fruits and vegetables. Concentrate on carbohydrates that are made from whole grains and stay away from starches such as pasta, bread and rice. These are just filled with empty calories and have no real nutritional value. Avoiding deep fried foods, sugary sodas and greasy snacks also promotes weight loss.

When building a better diet for yourself, look for green and brightly colored vegetables, dark leafy greens and fresh fruit and berries to accompany your meals. Make smart choices like lean turkey and chicken or seafood and eggs, which are high in protein and low in fat. Grass-fed beef and bison are also much leaner than regular beef, but may be harder to find in your local grocery store. Try low fat milk or a soy beverage instead of whole milk to cut even more calories. Rather than looking for the perfect diet plan, try making some changes to your current eating habits to conform to a healthier lifestyle.
