Many people are starting to grow their own fruits and vegetables and while the garden looks healthy and the food tastes good, it doesn't mean that the food is the very best for you. The pesticides you have used to keep the bugs off the plant and the fertilizer used to help the growth of the plant are not healthy. There is a way to change all that with "organic gardening". With organic gardening, you are not using anything synthetic on your soil or plants.
Compost is one of the most important things needed for an organic garden. It consists of anything that used to be alive and is composed largely of rotted fruits, vegetables and leaves. Mulch is another important item because it helps keep your garden healthy. It helps with weed control and discourages unwanted plants from springing up. Layer mulch over your entire garden about three inches thick, then clear little spots for planting. You can help make your garden look nice by using mulch to separate the walking area from the garden area. For unwanted pests such as caterpillars or beetles you can mix biodegradable soap with water. The mixture can be sprayed on the plants. Remember to check your plants often, because rain will wash off the mixture. For unwanted squirrels, rabbits or skunks, you will want to use a physical barrier instead of poison.
You never know what the hidden additives are when you purchase food from the grocery store. That's why organic gardening is a healthful approach to growing your own delicious food.
