Whether you are an avid bird watcher, or just enjoy the birds in your yard, knowing what to have available to them will keep them coming back! Some birds can be very colorful and entertaining, while others can become a nuisance. Check with your local extension office to see what birds are common to your area.
Once you have learned which birds frequent your area, learn what they feed on. Providing them with plants that they enjoy will attract them to eat from your yard. Having plants that produce seeds for those that eat them and nectar producing plants for the ones that prefer nectar will help keep them coming around. When the plants are out of season, providing feeders in the yard will keep them feeding in your yard. Always make sure there is a supply of water available for them as well.
Housing is important, as the birds will want to build nests to hatch their young. Knowing what the birds need to build their nests will help you in choosing shrubs and houses. Most of your birds are prey for many other animals, so a safe secure place for them to nest is important. Your cat or a neighbor’s cat is a bird’s worst enemy.
Birds love to take a bath. If you will provide them with a small pool of water, they will learn that they can bathe in your yard. Provide them with a sunny spot to bathe and preen themselves, away from strong winds.
Happy birds bring happy sounds to the yard! Set a bench in the garden and sit outside with nature to absorb its true beauty. There is much to be learned by nature when we take the time to learn what they enjoy!
