Sewing machines have been a part of our domestic ‘tool kit’ since the mid-19th century. However, unlike those simple machines, consumers today are faced with a wide variety of models as well as prices ranging from as little as $70 to ones costing over $6,000. This plethora of choices can be confusing and costly if a buyer is unsure what type of machine they need.
So how does one make the right choice? First, the sewing machine should meet or slightly exceed the user’s expertise. Second, the buyer should determine how the machine will be used. A third consideration is where the sewing machine will be located. Some machines have a simple protective case. Others can be placed in cabinets or craft tables. Depending on how often the sewing machine will be used, buying a piece of furniture might not be the best choice.
Finally, purchasing a sewing machine is a financial investment, so a little preliminary research is a good idea. One of the best, and easiest ways to decide on the right machine is to ‘test drive’ several models. This allows the prospective buyer to see how each model operates and determine if the machine is equal to or above the skill level of the user. Buying a machine with all the ‘buttons and whistles’ might seem like a great idea, especially if future sewing projects require features beyond basic sewing machine functions. But purchasing a sewing machine that calls for a degree in computer science could result in a very expensive ‘white elephant’ gathering dust in a closet. Remember, the newest, snazziest machine might not be the right choice, take your time and choose wisely.
