There are five basic rules to follow when teaching your children to eat healthy. First, make sure to have regular family meals around the same time every night. Second, provide a nice selection of healthy foods and snacks. Third, it is important to lead by example. Eat the foods you are encouraging your children to eat. Fourth, try not to fight over food; offer a few choices of different foods. And fifth, let your children help with food preparation.
It can be difficult getting your children to eat healthy foods, so to help, watch what kinds of food you buy and keep in stock in your home. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into every meal. If your children do not have the option to eat unhealthy foods it will make it easier for them to choose a healthy snack. This will also eliminate a lot of the arguing over what to eat.
Also teach your children to exercise or be physically active in some way each day. Try to eat something out of each food group every day. Teach them that there are some food groups you should eat more of each day like grains, dairy, vegetables and fruit. For example choose to have milk, cheese or yogurt as a snack. Eat meats such as skinless chicken or fish. Nuts are also a healthy choice. It is important that your children learn what makes food good for you. Healthy foods contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. Unhealthy foods contain sugar and fat. Vitamins and minerals allow you to grow strong bones and an overall healthy body.
