Container Gardening

Do you live in an apartment or have limited space and you want to grow a vegetable garden?  Consider planting in a container, which will grow very well in a small area such as a window sill or a balcony.

There are a lot of benefits to growing vegetables and herbs in a container.  It is convenient to be able to move your garden when you need to.  It’s great for the elderly and, if you’re a gourmet cook, you can have fresh herbs available when you need them.

Some of the vegetables you can plant are tomatoes, eggplant, beans, carrots, radishes and lettuce and peppers.  You can buy your soil and fertilizer from a garden store where the soil is prepared with all the nutrients needed.

There are all kinds of containers to choose from, such as clay, metal or wood.  You can purchase wooden boxes, plastic tubs and baskets.

Make sure that you have adequate drainage in your container by adding gravel to the bottom and punching holes so the water doesn’t sit at the bottom.  Or, you can get 2-inch plastic pipes in the soil so the water can flow through.  You will need plenty of sun and water every day for your vegetables.

When you plant, fill your container with your soil mixture and add your seeds.  Label each container the date you planted and type of plant.  Then give your seeds a good watering without disturbing the seeds.  If stakes are needed, it is a good idea to insert them when they are young plants so you don’t damage the roots.  There you go – happy gardening!
