In today’s society, statistics show that childhood obesity is rising at a disturbing rate. Children are less active and are rarely able to enjoy balanced meals.
Raising healthy children can be more difficult now than it was in the past because of economical changes. More single-family homes exist and in homes that have two parents, both parents usually have to work to manage, which may cause conflict with healthy food planning. Parents can get involved with their children’s health by becoming healthy eaters themselves and taking time to put a healthy eating plan into action. Parents can pay attention to the food pyramid and minimize unhealthy dietary choices. They can eat a healthy breakfast each day, educate children on making wise food choices, eat meals together as a family whenever possible, and exercise. Healthy shopping habits should start early, so when the child grows older he or she will know how to continue to shop healthy if he or she chooses to do so. When a parent has a child who is overweight, he or she should not criticize the child but the parent should make sure the child feels the love and acceptance he or she needs. Communities can also do their part to help raise healthy children by building sidewalks, parks, community swimming pools, and bike trails for fitness and outdoor fun.
Finally, plenty of water, fruits, vegetables, and foods high in fiber should always be available for children. Healthy snacks such as trail mixes or smoothies can be fun, healthy treats for children on the go.
