Aquatic Gardens

One of the best things you can do to encourage wildlife in your backyard is to add a water component to your garden.  This can be a waterfall, a fish pond, or just a small pool of water with aquatic plants.  A typical water garden contains both fish and plants.  Remember, the size of your pond will determine how many fish and/or plants that you will be able to sustain.  The most common complaint of most first-time pond builders is that they built their ponds too small.  In addition, a bigger pond is easier to maintain than a smaller one.

After you have determined what kind of water element you want and decided on the size, the next step is to find a location.  Avoid a location close to trees where the debris will fall into the pond.  Try to pick a spot where rain runoff will not contaminate the water with fertilizers and chemicals.  Another consideration is whether your pond will need a pump and/or filter system.  The sound of running water is both soothing to people and will attract more wildlife, including birds and butterflies.  Once you have your location, it’s time to start digging.  Ponds in warmer climates need to be at least 2 feet deep for goldfish and plants.  Koi need a minimum of 3 or more feet, and colder climates require enough depth to keep your pond from freezing solid.

Follow your manufacturer’s directions to install the pond liner, pumps, filtration system and any other components to your pond.  Add your fish and plants, and landscape the surrounding area to highlight your new pond. Time to sit back and enjoy your aquatic garden!
